(CNN) -- Pop star Britney Spears has been taken to UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles city police told CNN Thursday.

An officer with the North Hollywood Police Department said "a few officers" were dispatched to Spears house about 12:55 a.m. Thursday.

He would not say why officers were called to the house, nor where Spears was taken.

Hours earlier, around 11 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to a report of a large group of people gathered outside near the singer's home, said David Grimes of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Two officers found 20 to 25 people near the house, but they appeared to be doing nothing illegal. The officers asked the people to leave, he said.

On January 3, Spears was taken to Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles to see if she was under the influence of alcohol or drugs and for a psychological evaluation. Police had been called to her home that night to mediate a custody dispute.

A day later, a California court refused to grant Spears visitation rights with her two children -- Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1 -- at least until mid-February.

Spears has been in a heated dispute with ex-husband Kevin Federline over custody of their sons. Federline, Spears' former backup dancer, holds primary custody of the children.

Spears has been in trouble with the court earlier concerning her compliance with court orders in the custody case. See Spears timeline »

TV host Barbara Walters said on Monday's "The View" that she had been contacted by Spears' manager and "good friend," Sam Lutfi, who told her the pop star has seen a psychiatrist and "is suffering from what he describes as mental issues which are treatable," The Associated Press reported.

After filing for divorce in November 2006, Spears was frequently seen enjoying Hollywood nightlife. Her behavior became increasingly erratic; in February 2007, she shaved her head as paparazzi looked on, then spent a month in rehab.

It seems as if there was some unnecessary urgency in a phone call Lynne Spears received tonight around 10:15 pm PT -- Lynne was worried that her daughter had attempted suicide, but now she has told X17online that "Britney is fine."

What isn't clear is why police arrived at Britney's home around 10 pm and cordoned off Britney's home and placed themselves at the gate to Brit's neighborhood.

We hope Britney is safe and that whatever emergency happened almost two hours ago has been taken care of and is over.
